'Empty Cups' on Nov. 8 Fights Hunger . . . One Cup at a Time

Classic Coffee in Glendora Village will host the first “Empty Cups” fund-raiser with First Christian Church of Glendora to “fight hunger . . . one cup at a time,” on Friday, Nov. 8, 5-7 p.m.

“Empty Cups” offers handmade ceramic cups for $15. Each donation includes the cup, a hot beverage and a ticket for prize drawings throughout the event.
This fundraiser is an extension of the First Christian Church’s “Empty Bowls” hunger relief project led by the Rev. Karen Davis and the FCC Outreach Division.  Due to the increased need of funding local hunger relief programs and the desire by Classic Coffee to aid those in need, “Empty Cups” was a perfect fit for a Fall benefit, says organizer Lynn Hendricks.
Proceeds from this event will support local hunger relief programs including Shepherd’s Pantry, St. Vincent de Paul and the Glendora Police Department food voucher program.
“In the past 10 years the ‘Empty Bowls’ benefit has raised over $80,000 to aid those in need of immediate hunger relief,” Hendricks says.  “The majority of the funds are raised during the benefit, but donations are received by First Christian Church throughout the year.”
Classic Coffee has “always donated to schools and our local churches, but we are excited and honored to be able to use the resources we have in a new way” says Jonathan Lambert, Classic Coffee general manager. “We are happy to facilitate an event that can move the community to do good. We have been blessed enough to be open for almost 10 years and if we can help bless people that are in need through this event, we are more than happy to do so.”

Local Agents Offer Help With Covered California Enrollment in Glendora Village

If the Covered California web site has you frustrated as you try to enroll for Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance coverage, you’re not alone.
But there are people to help you in Glendora Village.
There’s Maureen Carter, owner of Maureen Carter Insurance Agency and three agents of the Warner InsuranceAgency – Bill, Kirk and Rails Warner.
All four are certified agents authorized to help individuals and businesses find the right medical insurance being offered through Covered California’s health insurance exchange as part of the ACA.
There are only about 1,000 insurance agents “certified” so far in California out of 15,000 insurance agents statewide and more are being certified each week, and they are supplemented by insurance counselors and navigators.
The Glendora Chamber of Commerce will host a workshop
about the Affordable Care Act next Monday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m.
at the Citrus Valley Association of Realtors.
Click here for more information.

It’s tough to enroll through www.coveredca.com because of demand on the website, Maureen Carter explained, but she expects that to become easier by mid-November.
Until then, she and the WIA agents can fill out the paperwork in their offices, which is then emailed to Covered California.
Information about household income, number of family members, age, social security numbers and employment are required for enrollment.

“When they complete the application with us,” Kirk Warner explained, “they start the enrollment process and from there we help each applicant understand their subsidy eligibility, plan option, and doctor availability.”

Simpson Portraits Celebrates All of Who You Are

One wouldn’t think women in their 40s and 50s would have something in common with high school seniors, but contemporary portrait photographer Stephanie Simpson has discovered similarities.

Stephanie Simpson
“Women in their 40s and 50s know who they are, have worked hard and achieved a lot. High school seniors are at the top of their game, ready to start the next phase of their lives,” Simpson said. “They’re both feeling good and want to celebrate that.”
Both generations and everyone in between are clients at her studio, Simpson Portraits, at 200 N. Glendora Ave., Suite J, in Glendora Village (626-221-6646).
An important part of Simpson’s technique is “building a relationship” with a client, getting to know many aspects about them during an interview. She books one client per day, so she can spend time creating a portfolio of portrait styles that reflect each client's personality.

Makeup artist
Maggie Cathey prepares
client for photo shoot.
“My favorite thing is to learn someone’s face and expressions because everybody smiles differently. Some have a big toothy grin or a supermodel’s subtle smile. It depends on the person and the style of photography they want.”
A business person may want a couple images – a more formal one for their LinkedIn profile, more casual for Facebook. For an actor, their face is their brand and they need several different headshots to convey versatility for potential roles.
As part of the Simpson Portraits experience, all clients have their hair and makeup done by professional makeup artist, Maggie Cathey, whom Simpson met during a film project at Azusa Pacific University.
“I mostly work with natural light and Maggie has developed a makeup style just for that,” Simpson explained. “She does spectacular work. She’s so friendly and personable; our clients are treated well in her care.”

Fix That Pumpkin Craving at Glendora Village Restaurants

The weather is cooling down, we’re officially in Fall, the official pumpkin-flavored season (and seasoning).

There are all kinds of pumpkin goodies offered by Glendora Village’s restaurants.
Classic Coffee -- Classic Coffee’s mouth-watering pumpkin scones (left) are back on the menu through the end of the year. Dip them into a steaming cup of pumpkin spice chai or latte.
Kara’s Korner -- Owner Kara Larson says her husband Robert’s pumpkin cheesecake “is to die for,” and the deli also offers pumpkin cake and pumpkin pecan pancakes, and pumpkin muffins and bagels will be arriving soon.
Village Eatery -- Pumpkin pancakes the size of dinner plates are being served topped with whipped cream and cinnamon sugar. “They’re so large, I can only eat one at a time,” says owner Don Nolan. Each pancake is $2.75. Village Eatery’s home-made pumpkin pies are only $10 for a whole pie, and single slices are available, too.
